Best in Show

Congratulations to Jo Knight who has been awarded a Gold Medal at an International Salon in Belgium for her conceptual image of a Child Bride.  The photo was also awarded the medal for Best in Show (colour prints) and graces the front of the Exhibition catalogue.

Jo was also awarded a Photographic Society of America highly commended ribbon for her Evacuee picture in the same Salon.  She’s recently visited the Ikea website looking for a bigger shelving unit 😀

International photography Salons are a good place to showcase the photographs you’ve accumulated over the past year (what else do we do with them?!) and to keep your hand in at competitions during the summer break.  You may find that pictures which didn’t do so well in Camera Club competitions may do better in Salons (and vice versa!) as different countries and judges like different styles of images.

There are a variety of categories such as monochrome, open colour, nature, travel, creative or people and you may enter as many, or as few, as you like.  Most Salons are PDI, though a minority are print, and you can enter up to 4 photos per category.  You do have to pay to enter a Salon, anywhere from around £6 right up to £45 depending which Salon you choose and how many categories you enter, so make sure you’re aware of the cost before you commit.  Acceptances into a PSA, BPE or FIAP approved Salon go towards their distinctions.

There is detailed information on Salons, including how to enter, in the Competitions section of our website.

Salon Success

Entering national competitions and international photography Salons is a great way to showcase your work and if any of your photos are accepted into a Salon exhibition this counts towards the criteria needed for international distinctions. It’s achievement enough to have your work selected from the thousands of entries from all corners of the globe, but a real honour to receive a medal or award and I’m delighted to share the success of two of our Club members in national & international competitions.

Chris Bate gained a Highly Commended for his sequence ‘The Essential Link’, entered in the L&CPU  AV competition on the 9th February.

Mike Hughes received a Photographic Society of America gold medal for his picture ‘Steam Cycle’ in a Salon held in Serbia, and the same image was also awarded an IAAP bronze medal.

His ‘Choirboy’ image was awarded a PSA blue ribbon in the same competition.

Our congratulations to both members! For more information on Salons, and Salon distinctions, visit the competitions section of our website.

3 Way Battle 2019

On Wednesday 20th February, Crosthwaite Parish Rooms in Keswick hosted the annual 3 Way Battle between Penrith, Carlisle and Keswick Camera Clubs.  It’s a friendly annual contest, full of good-natured banter, and consists of 15 PDI images from each Club, which this year was judged by Richard Speirs DPAGB, BPE2* of Morton CC.

Penrith have always felt it’s important to enter images from a wide range of members, including beginners, and we only allow 1 image per author.  A small committee then chooses which photographs will represent our Club and this year’s entries can be seen below:

And the winners were:

  • 1st Keswick with 266 points.
  • 2nd Penrith with 254 points.
  • 3rd Carlisle with 246 points.

The Judge’s favourite image of the evening was ‘The Aracari and The Fly’, by a member of Keswick PS.

Our very own JDT won the raffle, bringing home a small book of Ansel Adams pictures, and a good night was had by all!

For those club members chosen to take part in the Battle your image scores can be found in the Members’ Section of our website.
