Tuesday Club Opening Night

Tuesday 9th October saw the first night of this season’s Tuesday Club, a series of beginners workshops for anyone interested in amateur photography.  As always the course is fully booked and there were 18 people in attendance, made up of both existing members of PDCC and the public.

The workshop took place from 7.30pm-9pm and included information on:

  • Different types of cameras (bridge, mirrorless, crop-sensor & full frame).
  • What to look for when buying a lens.
  • Protecting & cleaning our camera.
  • RAW v JPEG file formats.
  • Things to think about before taking a picture.
  • How to hold a camera.
  • Functions of the main buttons & dials.

This was followed by a brief over-view of the subjects we will be covering during the rest of the course.

Thanks go to John Tillotson, Les Ayres & Jo Knight for organizing and running the workshops and Dave Robinson for his help on the night.

Summer 2018

It’s been a cracking summer weather-wise for photography and during our Camera Club’s annual break Members have continued to meet up at various interesting events around the country and enjoyed a photography holiday on the Cowel Peninsular up in bonny Scotland.  Members are reminded to send photos of ‘things you have done over the summer’ to Janet who will be showing a selection of the most incriminating on our first night of the new Season!

There are still a couple of events taking place before Club starts again in September, most notably Edinburgh Fringe this weekend (18th August) and a social gathering in Appleby on 29th August.

Christine Hurford is continuing to show work in Greystoke Church alongside Janis Young, Thora Talling, Daphne and Jeremy Honey and Keith Spence until 20th August, and in addition Christine and Jane Peet are having their 4th summer Exhibition for Penrith Arts Festival from Wednesday 29th August until Sunday 2nd September above Eden Taxis in Friargate (look out for the signs).  Christine will be showing sketches and drawings as well as photographs of Langstrath and Jane will be showing derelict buildings and places.  The Exhibition is on daily from 10am to 4pm and all are welcome anytime for a chat and a drink.

Bookings for our Tuesday Club beginner’s workshops starting in October are now open and available to both Club Members and the public.  Seats are going quickly so please use the Contact Form on our website to reserve a place if you are interested in coming along.

Camera Club starts its new season on Wednesday 5th September at 7.30pm in the Quaker Meeting House, Penrith.  Anyone can attend as a guest for the evening to see what we’re all about and we welcome new members.  A reminder to existing members there is a hand in for the Summer Challenge, which is a PDI competition with the set theme of ‘motion’.  Look forward to seeing you all next month!

New Programmes

Our Annual Dinner & Awards Presentation took place on Friday 27th April and it was great to see so many Club members in attendance.  Huge thanks go to the organizers and I hope you’ll all agree the food was delicious and the venue well chosen.

The Dinner marked the end of the current Camera Club season, however we have a full programme of summer outings planned for members, a list of which can be found on our website alongside other events Club members may be interested in.  Details are now available for the Garden of Cosmic Speculation and final arrangements for other outings will be available on the website as they become available.  Non-members who would like to come along to any of the summer outings with a view to joining the Camera Club please contact us.

The Main Club Programme for the 2018/2019 season starting in September has now been finalized.  We welcome new members so if anyone would like to come along as a guest to see what we’re all about we would be happy to see you.  If you have any questions please see our About the Club section, FAQs or Contact Us.

Our Tuesday Club, which is a series of photography workshops aimed at beginners, also starts again in October.  The programme, dates and times have been revamped for the 2018/2019 season, details of which can be found on our website.

The Northern Photography & Video Show at Rheged Discovery Centre takes place during the weekend of 12th & 13th May.  Penrith & District Camera Club, alongside other Camera Clubs from around Cumbria, will be exhibiting a selection of members’ photographs during the event.  Do come along and say hello!

Friends Battle it out – 2015 Three Way

The 2015 Three Way Battle

On February 11th, the Friends Meeting House in Penrith saw a fiercely fight when Penrith & District Camera Club played host to a three-sided battle.

The contest between Carlisle, Keswick and Penrith camera clubs is an annual one, and is actually a friendly coming together of the clubs. Fifteen images from each were subject to the adjudication of Peter Yearnshire LRPS of Blyth Photographic Society. Having braved snow and ice crossing the Pennines, he gave interesting and helpful judgements on the entries

In the end, the winners were the Keswick club by a narrow margin. The “best” of the night was judged to be a magically image “Polar Bear on Ice” by Peter Snell of Keswick Club.

After the judging, an extensive and delicious spread was put on by the host club. “If we didn’t win the contest, we at least showed that we have lot of good cooks” – tables full of cakes and savouries met with considerable enthusiasm from the – by now – hungry contestants.
