Summer 2018

It’s been a cracking summer weather-wise for photography and during our Camera Club’s annual break Members have continued to meet up at various interesting events around the country and enjoyed a photography holiday on the Cowel Peninsular up in bonny Scotland.  Members are reminded to send photos of ‘things you have done over the summer’ to Janet who will be showing a selection of the most incriminating on our first night of the new Season!

There are still a couple of events taking place before Club starts again in September, most notably Edinburgh Fringe this weekend (18th August) and a social gathering in Appleby on 29th August.

Christine Hurford is continuing to show work in Greystoke Church alongside Janis Young, Thora Talling, Daphne and Jeremy Honey and Keith Spence until 20th August, and in addition Christine and Jane Peet are having their 4th summer Exhibition for Penrith Arts Festival from Wednesday 29th August until Sunday 2nd September above Eden Taxis in Friargate (look out for the signs).  Christine will be showing sketches and drawings as well as photographs of Langstrath and Jane will be showing derelict buildings and places.  The Exhibition is on daily from 10am to 4pm and all are welcome anytime for a chat and a drink.

Bookings for our Tuesday Club beginner’s workshops starting in October are now open and available to both Club Members and the public.  Seats are going quickly so please use the Contact Form on our website to reserve a place if you are interested in coming along.

Camera Club starts its new season on Wednesday 5th September at 7.30pm in the Quaker Meeting House, Penrith.  Anyone can attend as a guest for the evening to see what we’re all about and we welcome new members.  A reminder to existing members there is a hand in for the Summer Challenge, which is a PDI competition with the set theme of ‘motion’.  Look forward to seeing you all next month!

Panels – for the Millennium Trophy competition 2017/18

by John D Tillotson CPAGB PPSA, P&DCC Secretary

After some requests for information on the panel submission for the Millennium Trophy, here are some details. There will be a more detailed explanation on panels in the meeting on Wednesday 18th October 2017 by Les Ayres, who is to be the judge of the competition.

The panel is to be made up of three unmounted prints – each with a maximum size of A4, either landscape or portrait.

The panel will be judged and assessed as a whole, not as individual prints; as such there should be a single title for the whole triptych of images.

The idea of this panel of prints is to submit a set of images with a common theme, subject, link or story. They should also work together in terms of colour and/or tones and presentation.

One thing to consider might be ‘balance’ – if the left-hand image has a property, perhaps the right-hand one could have the same property – e.g. a dark image, or looking out from the centre of the panel, or landscape format rather than portrait.

As in any other print competition, print quality is important.

The prints should be marked on the back with the usual information – AND with their position WHEN VIEWED FROM THE FRONT (usually ‘left’, ‘centre’ and ‘right’ but can be ‘top’ ‘middle’ and ‘bottom’).
