Western Area Battle 2018

This year’s Western Area Battle was hosted by West Cumbria Photo Group and took place on Saturday 27th October at Distington Community Centre.  The Battle is an annual competition between Penrith, Dumfries, Carlisle, Keswick, Morton, Copeland, West Cumbria and Workington Camera Clubs, who together form the Western Area of the Northern Counties Photographic Federation.  Six mounted prints and six projected digital images were submitted by each club and had to include a minimum of 1 Landscape, 1 Portrait, 1 Creative and I Nature.

The event commenced at 2.30pm when we were honoured with a talk by Elena McTighe, FPSA, MPSA, President of the Photographic Society of America who showed us wildlife images taken in Florida, followed by the presentation of PSA awards obtained by photographers from our area.  We were then treated to a buffet before the Battle began, with images judged by Elena who started with the PDI section.

Penrith & District’s PDI Entries

Several PDI images from across the Clubs were awarded 20 points and Elena chose a photograph of a flower from Dumfries Camera Club as her overall favourite shot.  After adding all the scores together, the top three Clubs in the PDI category were:

  • 1st: Workington
  • 2nd: Copeland
  • 3rd: Keswick
  • with Penrith coming a respectable 4th just 1 point behind.

Penrith & District’s Print Entries

In the print section again Elena awarded more than one top mark of 20 points, including to our very own Les Ayres, and her overall favourite image of a Fox in snow was taken by a member of Keswick Camera Club.  After adding all the scores together, the top three Clubs in the Print category were:

  • 1st: Keswick
  • 2nd: Penrith
  • 3rd: Carlisle

Scores for both sections were then added together and the final result of the Battle was:

  • Winner: Keswick (212 points)
  • Runner-up: Penrith (207 points – our best result for some considerable time!)

Individual scores for each of our Club’s entries are available on the Inter-Club Competition Results page in the Member’s section of our website.

Friends Battle it out – 2015 Three Way

The 2015 Three Way Battle

On February 11th, the Friends Meeting House in Penrith saw a fiercely fight when Penrith & District Camera Club played host to a three-sided battle.

The contest between Carlisle, Keswick and Penrith camera clubs is an annual one, and is actually a friendly coming together of the clubs. Fifteen images from each were subject to the adjudication of Peter Yearnshire LRPS of Blyth Photographic Society. Having braved snow and ice crossing the Pennines, he gave interesting and helpful judgements on the entries

In the end, the winners were the Keswick club by a narrow margin. The “best” of the night was judged to be a magically image “Polar Bear on Ice” by Peter Snell of Keswick Club.

After the judging, an extensive and delicious spread was put on by the host club. “If we didn’t win the contest, we at least showed that we have lot of good cooks” – tables full of cakes and savouries met with considerable enthusiasm from the – by now – hungry contestants.
